New Bremen (NY) – This past Saturday, everyone in attendance at the Adirondack International Speedway survived a terrible forecast, however Tommy Cloce survived a second forecast, this one of his own. Not to mention, a much stronger forecast than any weather man could ever tell.

With the ASA-sanctioned Adirondack International Speedway opening this past Saturday for their seventh consecutive year of racing, Tommy Cloce opened up his season dialed in, and hitting on all cylinders as he outlasted four-time champion John Papin down to the line to take his second career victory at Adirondack in the ASA Challenger Late Model division.

The past open-wheel Asphalt Modified veteran started on the pole position and led wire-to-wire in a 100-lap clash that guaranteed him a starting position in the TJ Toyota/Waite Toyota Renegade Nationals 200 for October. Although having battled off a strong bid from Papin, Cloce hung on in the end to capture the $1,500 payday and set his 2008 season off on the right foot. Cloce, driving the family-owned No. 3 Toyota Camry and Papin who recently picked up a ride with Ontario, Canada based Charlie Price, each split heat-race victories earlier in the night. The two put a show on for the fans as they battled neck and neck in the second half of the race, and later went all out for a green-white-checkers finish. Following them across the line were Bryant Trim, Jerry Dineen and Chris Ross. The Lyndaker Excavating & Trucking ASA Late Model event was slowed with just 20 laps to go when Erik Cupernall impacted the front stretch wall head-on while running within the top-five. Cupernall was able to walk away from the incident unscathed.

In the GotGoodCheese.com True Stocks, Mike Ramos and JR Mooney battled from start-to-finish with Mooney taking the victory. For the 2007 Track Champion, Mooney’s celebration was cut short as his victory was scratched after failing technical inspection. Ramos, originally finishing second was shuffled to first. Jason Dinzler of Watertown (NY) finished second, showing an impressive run while Tom Markham took third and Croghan’s (NY) Randy Widrick finished fourth. Rounding out the top-five was Oswego’s (NY) Joe Miller in his No. 9.

Scott Shafer started in the third position in the D&D Powersports Sport Compact division and went on to take the win in the 15-lap event. Shafer was chased to the checkered flag by division hot shoes Rudy Widrick and Tom Dubach, Nate Plantz and Tim Dunn rounded out the top-five.

With a total of 20 trucks making the call for a 20-lap contest in the Westward Painting Company Light Trucks, Cooter Beyer and John Sullivan, Jr. would start on the front row. The two pilots would battle it out for the length of the event before Beyer would come out on top. Close behind at the finish was Sullivan followed by last place starter Dave Keefer. Finishing fourth was Levi Kirkbride of Lyons Falls (NY) and rounding out the top-five was Chuck Snyder of Boonville (NY).

The entire event was threatened by rain shortly before warm-ups were scheduled to take to the track. The delay lasted a short 30 minutes before the track was dried off and prepared for the hot-lap session. The four-division event began just 15 minutes late. Three hours later the final checkered flag of the night was flown.

Next week at the facility is Military Appreciation Night sponsored by Otis Gun Technology and AmeriCU Federal Credit Union. All active-duty soldiers and their families will be admitted free of charge to the event. AmeriCU will be conducting a Chicken Barbeque for all “Wounded Warriors”. The Wounded Warriors are made up of a group of soldiers that have been injured while in combat in Afghanistan and Iraq, these Warriors will be admitted free of charge. Also highlighting the day will be the attendance of military vehicles and a Color Guard team from Fort Drum (NY). Pit gates will open at 3pm while grandstands will do so at 4pm. Racing will begin promptly at 6:30pm. For more information you can log on to www.adirondackspeedway.com or contact (315) 346-RACE.
